  • Green peppers

If you choose a pickled pepper instead of fresh peppers for honey jalapeno cornbread, drain, and place on a paper towel to absorb excess moisture.

Substitutions for Honey:

  • Corn syrup
  • Maple syrup
  • Molasses
  • Brown Sugar

If you find you don’t have any honey on hand (you know, someone put the empty honey bear back in the cupboard and didn’t say anything). And your heart and menu are set on a honey cornbread recipe; well, there are a few substitutions that can work.

Keep in mind, since the key ingredient is honey (so says the recipe name), the flavor will be decidedly affected; however, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Maple glazed jalapeno is sounding kind of yummy right now…

Honey Jalapeno Cornbread Recipe FAQs

Do I use white or yellow cornmeal for jalapeno cornbread?

You can use either white or yellow cornmeal in cornbread. It comes down to your preference and what flavor profile you prefer. In this honey jalapeno cornbread recipe, you will enhance the sweetness by choosing yellow cornmeal, as it is typically sweeter than the white variety of cornmeal.

What is the difference between white and yellow cornmeal?

One is made from a white corn kernel, and the other is from yellow corn kernels. Yellow corn is naturally sweeter and provides a sweeter meal and a fuller corn taste to recipes.

You can find both color corn meals in varying grinds: fine, medium, and coarse. Stone grind is preferred if you are looking to retain some of the natural hull and germ, which also increases the nutrient content of the meal.

Can you use pickled jalapenos instead of fresh in jalapeno cornbread?

Yes, the acidity of the pickled jalapenos brightens the cornbread and complements the sweetness of the honey. Make sure they are well-drained, and you can also place a few drained jalapeno wheels on the top of the batter for a pretty pattern.
