NATURAL AIR FRESHENER
Natural Air Fresheners are so much better for the health of the environment as well as our own health. They are a great way to keep your home smelling fresh without chemicals. And besides, they just smell so darn much better. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE fragrance! But, I HATE, HATE, HATE artificial scents! And, they can really wreak havoc with allergy sufferers. I even noticed my dog sneezing after spraying a store-bought air freshener.
There are so many ways we can fragrance the air in our home without resorting to chemical-laden, commercial air fresheners.
When we moved into our farmhouse, I was happy delighted ecstatic over-the-moon to discover the property included eight lilac bushes in purple and white. Since I was a little girl, living in a home with a lilac bush, I have always wanted a big lilac bush in my yard. Not sure why we never planted one; guess I just wanted it to be there. They are the perfect Natural Air Freshener
This is what we found on our property, come Spring the first year.
And, this
And, six more!!!!
Dan came in with an armful of the fragrant blooms. I followed behind him, just breathing in that intoxicating aroma. Lilacs are by far my favorite flower. Unfortunately, the flowering times are so short-lived but so worth it!
Even the dogs were impressed. Usually they prefer stinky stuff, but, their noses were glued to the flowers. Maybe they were actually appalled by the smell but I prefer to hope they have more highly developed taste. Yeah, right!!!
Right away I got to work, putting the blooms into containers. I love to use containers I have throughout the house, such as storage jars and old milk bottles. You can even use clear glass salt shakers for tiny arrangements.
These look great in a windowsill and can often be found at garage sales for next to nothing. Doesn’t even matter if they have the lids (which would also lower the price.)

If you don’t have fresh flowers growing in your yard, there are many other things you can do to make your home smell amazing without without harming the environment or your family’s health.
Natural Home Air Freshener
- Essential Oil is one of the best natural air fresheners. These are the natural oils extracted from plants, such as: lavender, patchouli, lemongrass, rosemary…… Essential oils usually are sold in small vials and that’s okay because a little goes a long way. Essential oil on a cotton ball, tucked away behind items on the shelves in your home will provide a whiff of fresh scent as you pass. escape each time the roll is used.
- Room sprays, made safe and natural can be made at home. You avoid the expense and toxicity of store-bought ones. Simply add a few drops of essential oil to a teaspoon of baking soda and mix. Add to a spray bottle filled with water (Amount of water depends on how strong you prefer your fragrance. I usually use about 16 ounces of water.) Spray the wonderfully fragrant mixture about your rooms, lightly mist draperies, mattresses and upholstery. Don’t forget your dog’s sleeping area.
- Another great home deodorizer can be made by adding a few drops of essential oils to pine cones and display on your coffee table. Try adding other natural items collected from your yard, such as bits of tree bark, flower pods and decorative grasses.
- Dried flowers, such as lavender and roses are wonderfully fragrant. Place them in small bowls throughout your house. I like to make simple net or lace fabric pouches, place the flowers inside and tie up with a pretty ribbon. They are easy to make by cutting a rectangle shape from the netting of your choice. Size is up to you; i prefer about 4 inches x 8 inches. Fold in half short end to short end, then stitch up each side, leaving the top open. Fill with dried flowers of your choice, tie with ribbon and tuck into areas throughout your home.
- Tuck behind items on your bookshelves. Place some of the sachet bags between towels and sheets in your linen closet. Hang from a hook in your closet. The bottom of the dirty clothes basket can definitely benefit from the fresh scent of these potpourri bags. And, don’t forget to tuck one into the pillowcase on your bed for a sweet dreams sleep. Lavender is known to be relaxing.
If you don’t want to bother making the net bags, they can be purchased here, inexpensively.
- Natural home deodorizers can be made by simmering citrus and spices on your stove top. Turn off heat after about 20 minutes and the aroma will remain in the air. Try using cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves or lemon, orange and lime slices. Or, add them all together for a wonderful potpourri.
I recently purchased a terrific item, a diffuser. It’s electric with a little bowl inside. Water is placed in the bowl along with a few drops of essential oil. They also come in a waterless style. As the oil heats, it creates a mist that is diffused from the top. I love this. I keep it on my nightstand and use it at night with a wonderful mix of lavender, patchouli and cedar. Mine also has changing color led lights to add to the soothing effect. Very relaxing!
